How to Calculate How Many Pavers You Need
Paver quantity depends on both the area being covered and the face dimensions of each paver. A waste allowance helps account for cuts and breakage.
How to calculate it
- Measure the project length and width.
- Calculate the project area.
- Measure the paver length and width.
- Convert paver dimensions to compatible units.
- Divide project area by the area of one paver and add the selected waste allowance.
Formula
Pavers = project area ÷ paver area × (1 + waste% ÷ 100).
Example
For a 20 ft × 12 ft area using 12 in × 6 in pavers with 5% waste, the estimate is 504 pavers.
Important notes
- Actual counts can change with the laying pattern and edge cuts.
- Include the joint pattern and manufacturer's installation requirements when planning the layout.
- For complex shapes, calculate separate sections rather than relying on one rectangle.
Before ordering materials
Use measurements from the actual project whenever possible and keep all dimensions in compatible units. Material coverage, yield, density, package size, waste, compaction, cuts, overlaps, and site conditions can affect the quantity that must be purchased.
