How to Calculate How Much Mulch You Need
Mulch is normally estimated from the area of the bed and the planned depth. The calculation is simple, but the depth must be expressed in the same unit as the length and width.
How to calculate it
- Measure the bed length and width.
- Decide on the target mulch depth.
- Convert the depth to the same unit used for the other dimensions.
- Multiply length × width × depth.
- Convert the volume into the bag or bulk unit sold by your supplier.
Formula
Mulch volume = length × width × depth.
Example
A 20 ft × 10 ft bed with 0.25 ft of mulch requires 50 cubic feet.
Important notes
- Irregular beds can be divided into smaller rectangles and calculated separately.
- Freshly spread material can settle, so the purchased quantity may need a practical allowance.
- Do not use a bag coverage number from one product for another product without checking its label.
Before ordering materials
Use measurements from the actual project whenever possible and keep all dimensions in compatible units. Material coverage, yield, density, package size, waste, compaction, cuts, overlaps, and site conditions can affect the quantity that must be purchased.
The calculation on this page is intended as a transparent estimating method. Compare the result with manufacturer instructions, supplier ordering units, project drawings, and applicable local requirements before placing an order.
