How to Calculate How Much Gravel You Need
For a simple rectangular area, gravel volume is calculated from length, width and depth. The result is a volume estimate that can then be converted to bags, cubic yards or weight using supplier-specific information.
How to calculate it
- Measure the length of the area.
- Measure the width.
- Choose the planned gravel depth.
- Multiply length × width × depth.
- Convert the result to the purchasing unit used by your supplier.
Formula
Gravel volume = length × width × depth.
Example
A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 0.25 ft depth requires 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet of volume.
Important notes
- Keep every dimension in the same unit.
- Compaction and settling can change the amount you need to order.
- If buying by weight, use the supplier's bulk density rather than assuming a universal value.
Before ordering materials
Use measurements from the actual project whenever possible and keep all dimensions in compatible units. Material coverage, yield, density, package size, waste, compaction, cuts, overlaps, and site conditions can affect the quantity that must be purchased.
The calculation on this page is intended as a transparent estimating method. Compare the result with manufacturer instructions, supplier ordering units, project drawings, and applicable local requirements before placing an order.
