How to Calculate Fence Posts
For a straight fence, a simple estimate divides total fence length by the planned post spacing and adds one post for the endpoint. Gates, corners and changes in direction require additional planning.
How to calculate it
- Measure the total fence run.
- Choose the planned post spacing.
- Divide fence length by post spacing.
- Round the number of intervals up.
- Add one endpoint post for a simple straight run.
Formula
Estimated posts = ceiling(fence length ÷ spacing) + 1.
Example
For 100 ft of straight fence with 8 ft spacing, the estimate is ceiling(100 ÷ 8) + 1 = 14 posts.
Important notes
- Corners, gates and ends can require additional posts.
- Post spacing depends on fence design, materials, wind exposure and local requirements.
- Treat the calculator as an estimating tool rather than a structural design.
Before ordering materials
Use measurements from the actual project whenever possible and keep all dimensions in compatible units. Material coverage, yield, density, package size, waste, compaction, cuts, overlaps, and site conditions can affect the quantity that must be purchased.
The calculation on this page is intended as a transparent estimating method. Compare the result with manufacturer instructions, supplier ordering units, project drawings, and applicable local requirements before placing an order.
